Unit 3: Yesterday and Today
In this unit, pupils compare life in the past with life today. They read about Pua Khein Seng, the young Malaysian who invented the flash drive, learn dictionary skills, write a reply to an email message, and study possessive pronouns. They also read a poem, 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' by Roald Dahl.
Pupils compare how life was different in the past from today:
Farming — then vs. now
Computers — then vs. now
Transport — then vs. now

Pua Khein Seng is a young Malaysian who invented the flash drive — a memory device for storing information to or from a computer. He invented it when he was 27 years old:
He is from Sekinchan, Selangor.
He left Malaysia at age 19 to study electrical control engineering at Chiao Tung University, Taiwan.
In his third year, he began research into flash memory technology.
After his studies, he set up a company with his friends.
His advice: have patience, do not give up, keep improving yourself.
How to look for meanings of words we do not understand:
First, read the whole paragraph.
Second, underline the words you do not understand. Try to guess their meanings.
Finally, look for the meaning of the words in the dictionary.
The ⭐ symbol shows the word is in the list of important words.
Example: invent (verb) — to produce or design something that has not existed before.
Jagjit sent Nurul an email about a badminton practice with the new coach, Mr. Ramesh. Pupils help Nurul reply:
Practice: Wednesday next week, 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Venue: school badminton court — bring your racquet (shuttles provided).
Mr. Ramesh will train them for three months.
Jagjit lost her racquet and asks to borrow one.
Arrange words in alphabetical order: conduct, device, invent, research, patience.
Possessive pronouns are used to show possession. They replace nouns.

A poem by Roald Dahl. Excerpt:
As soon as Wolf began to feel, that he would like a decent meal,
He went and knocked on Grandma's door.
When Grandma opened it, she saw the sharp white teeth, the evil grin.
And Wolf said, 'May I come in?'
Poor Grandma almost died. 'He's going to eat me up!' she cried.
Rhyming words: feel — meal, grin — in, died — cried.
Pua Khein Seng invented the flash drive at age 27 while studying in Taiwan. His advice for success: have patience, never give up, and keep improving yourself.
Possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs, its) replace nouns to show ownership. They never use an apostrophe — 'its' (possessive) is different from 'it's' (it is).
