Unit 5: Rosemary and the Four Gutsy Gnomes
In this unit, pupils explore a fantasy story about Princess Rosemary and the four gnomes who help her save the kingdom of Renosia from fierce monsters. They learn story vocabulary (magic wand, armour, fairy, gnome), study the Simple Past Tense (regular and irregular verbs), and read an excerpt from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Pupils look at the cover and pick a word to use in a sentence. Vocabulary:
magic wand, armour, fairy, gnome, elves
magic potion, ogre, sword, crown
carriage, monster, castle
Example: I pick 'castle', 'magic wand', and 'elves'. My sentence would be...
A long time ago, a beautiful fairy princess named Rosemary lived in the kingdom of Renosia. She was kind and helpful, and her people respected her:
One day, fierce monsters attacked the land and wanted to own Renosia.
They held all the magical creatures captive — nobody could defend themselves.
Rosemary flew through a secret tunnel and escaped.
She stumbled upon four gnomes sitting on toadstools, plucking wild berries.
For weeks, the gnomes planned a surprise attack and made magic potions to turn the monsters into stone.
They sprinkled the potions on the monsters, freed the prisoners, and took over the kingdom.
Rosemary presented a pot of gold to the gnomes. Good always triumphs over evil.
Pupils sequence the sentences in the correct order:
Rosemary was a kind and helpful princess.
One day, fierce monsters attacked the land.
Rosemary flew quickly through a secret tunnel.
She stumbled upon four gnomes sitting on toadstools.
The gnomes gave her food and clothes.
For weeks, they planned a surprise attack on the monsters.
When they were finally ready, they returned to Renosia and sprinkled magic potions on the monsters.
Finally, they managed to defeat the monsters and lived happily ever after.
Pupils use connectors to make the story more interesting:
finally, and, but, then, suddenly
Example: 'Suddenly, she stumbled upon four gnomes sitting on toadstools.'
Pupils write a new story: 'One day, it was Rosemary's birthday ...'
Irregular verbs do NOT end with -d or -ed in the past tense.

Choose the correct simple past form:
The prince (took, takes) over the throne after the king died.

The beautiful princess (meet, met) her handsome prince.

Seeing a rabbit running past her was not a strange thing.
But when the rabbit took a watch out of its pocket, Alice got up quickly.
She was just in time to see it go down a large rabbit hole near the hedge.
Pupils write a dialogue for Alice or the rabbit to say and act.
The story of Rosemary teaches us that good will always triumph over evil. Rosemary could not save her people alone, so she sought help from the four gutsy gnomes — together they defeated the monsters.
Irregular verbs do NOT follow the -ed rule. Examples: fly → flew, see → saw, go → went, make → made. Some verbs like 'put', 'cut', 'hurt', 'let', and 'read' do not change at all in the past tense!
