Unit 6: Care for the Sea
In this unit, pupils learn about caring for the sea and the environment. They read about a beach clean-up, sea turtles (and the four types found in Malaysia), starfish and seaweed, and the life cycle of turtles. They practise using quotation marks, study the Present Continuous Tense, and recite two poems — 'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' and 'My Bonnie'.
Nurul invites Jagjit to a beach clean-up on International Beach Clean-Up Day:
The beach used to be beautiful but is now full of rubbish.
People should be more responsible.
Throwing rubbish into drains and rivers will end up in the sea.
Throwing rubbish from boats and on beaches harms the environment.
Pupils promise: throw rubbish into bins, organise clean-ups at beaches, river banks, and parks.
At an environmental exhibition, Kinah and Pravin learn about sea creatures:

There are four types of sea turtles found in Malaysia. All are endangered:
Green turtle, Hawksbill turtle, Leatherback turtle, Olive-ridley turtle
Kinah watches a turtle come out of the water at night to lay eggs.
Loud noise and bright lights will disturb a nesting turtle.
The turtle digs a hole with its flippers, lays eggs, and covers the hole with sand.
Kinah helps take the eggs to a turtle hatchery nearby.
The hatchery officer marks the sand clearly with a sign.
Threats to sea turtles and how to help:
The beaches where they nest are polluted.
Too much development on the beaches; noise and bright lights disturb the turtles.
Adult sea turtles are caught in fishing nets.
Some people eat the eggs.
Help: do not throw rubbish into the sea, do not disturb nesting turtles, do not eat their eggs.
Quotation marks (" ") indicate speech or conversation. They are placed around utterances, sayings, or quotations.
Sentence: "Thank you for inviting me," said Kinah.
Sentence: "We must always throw our rubbish into bins," said Mr. Ramesh.
Questions and exclamations also use quotation marks.
Rewrite with correct punctuation: 'good morning pravin said rania' → "Good morning," Pravin said Rania.
The Present Continuous Tense shows what is happening now or around a time. Form: am/is/are + verb-ing.
Happening now: I am going to the taekwondo tournament now.
Happening now: He is eating a sandwich at the canteen.
Happening now: They are playing football in the field.
Around a time: I am making a wreath with grandfather.
Around a time: Mr. Ramesh is travelling in Europe at the moment.
Example: She swims → She is swimming.
Pupils recite and act out the poems:
'Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf' by Roald Dahl — Red Riding Hood walks in the jungle to visit her Grandma who's sick.
'My Bonnie lies over the ocean' (to the tune of My Bonnie) — about longing for someone across the sea.
Pupils write a sentence in the Present Continuous Tense for each picture clue (e.g. eat, salad).
Four types of sea turtles are found in Malaysia: green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive-ridley — all are endangered. Loud noise and bright lights disturb nesting turtles, so observers must keep a distance and stay quiet.

Sea turtles have lived on Earth for over 100 million years — since the time of the dinosaurs! A female sea turtle returns to the same beach where she was born to lay her eggs. The hatchery programme in Malaysia protects turtle eggs from predators and poachers, giving baby turtles a better chance to survive.
