Unit 13: Lost and Found
This unit is about a scavenger hunt and the funny story 'Who Ate My Socks?'. Pupils learn adverbs of frequency (always, often, sometimes, seldom, never), build a detective kit, and read about Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.
The pupils of 5 Bestari go on a scavenger hunt around the school. Sample items to find:
Something red / soft / hard / purple / round / beautiful
Three different sized books; something you use to draw
Two different types of leaves; two different coloured pencils
Three coins of different amounts; something you wear on your hand
Members pose questions to the other team about what they found and where
Sally and Bob lose their favourite socks and cap. They use a detective kit and follow clues. Story sequence:
Sally and Bob lose their socks and cap; they think thieves stole them
Clue 1: a car wheel — they think the thieves escaped in a hurry
Clue 2: fur — they think a monster stole them, but the fur is from Browny the cat
Clue 3: leaves flying — they think it's an alien ship, but it's dad in the garden
Strange noises at the back of the house — it's their mother with the washing machine
The 'monster' that ate the socks and cap was actually the washing machine!
Pupils list five items for their detective kit and write about an item they have lost. Possible kit items:
laptop, compass, camera, notepad, pen, cotton buds, torch, magnifying glass
toothbrush, film, gloves, newspaper, pills, ointment, test tubes
Lost item writing prompts: What did you lose? Where and when did it happen?
How did you feel? Did you find it? What did you learn?
Adverbs of frequency show how often we do something.

The Lost Boys impatiently wait for Wendy to arrive and tell them stories. Captain Hook suddenly appears and orders the pirates to catch them all and take them to his ship.

Adverbs of frequency show how often something happens: always (100%), often (many times), sometimes (occasionally), seldom (not often), never (0%). Examples: 'I always brush my teeth.' 'She never goes out at night.'

The word 'detective' was first used in 1842 — before that, investigators were called 'thief-takers'! The most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887 and never actually said 'Elementary, my dear Watson' in the original stories.
