Unit 4: Malaysian Legends
This unit explores Malaysian legends such as Bujang Senang, Cik Siti Wan Kembang, and Lake Chini. Pupils learn what a legend is, write about legends, study interrogative pronouns, and recite the poem 'Seaside'.

A legend is a story from ancient times about places or events that may or may not be true
Legends have supernatural elements or magic
Characters are remembered for special values such as bravery, honesty, or beauty
Sarawak has the legend of Bujang Senang — a man-eating crocodile on the Lupar River
Simalungun, a brave Iban warrior, was transformed by magic spirits into Bujang Senang
Cik Siti Wan Kembang was the female ruler of Kelantan from age 30. Lake Chini in Pahang consists of twelve lakes. Key points:
Cik Siti Wan Kembang is a legendary figure for her beauty, courage, and wisdom
She rode into battle on a horseback with an army of female horse riders
Her favourite animal was the deer — it became a symbol of the Kelantan state emblem
She is the only female who ruled a state in our country
Lake Chini is famous for its mysteries including the dragon Naga Seri Gumum
Pupils rewrite sentences about Lake Chini in neat cursive writing, find meanings of words (lakes, famous, mysteries, beauty, transformed, ancient, remains, surround), and answer questions about the legend of Mahsuri.
Where did the story of Mahsuri happen?
Who punished her? Why was she punished?
What happened to Pulau Langkawi after her death?
Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions.

Poem 'Seaside' by Shirley Hughes describes sand in sandwiches, pools of seaweed, waves pouring into a sand-castle moat. A shape poem is a poem shaped like an object.

Interrogative pronouns ask questions: What (things), Whose (ownership), Which (choice), Who/Whom (people). A legend is an ancient story that may or may not be true and often contains magic. Cik Siti Wan Kembang is the only female ruler of a Malaysian state.

Cik Siti Wan Kembang never married and according to legend, never died but 'disappeared' into the mystical world — no one has found her tomb to this day. The legend of Mahsuri says she cursed Langkawi for seven generations after being wrongly put to death.
