Unit 6: Self-Protection
This unit teaches pupils how to stay safe from harm. Topics include kidnapping, extorting money, good touch vs bad touch, bullying, and the future continuous tense. The unit ends with Charlie Bucket's family from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Self-protection is important to protect ourselves from harm. Key safety tips:
Kidnapping: should not talk to strangers, should be accompanied by an adult
Extorting money: should not carry a lot of money, must not show off money
Good touch: a pat on the back or a hug from parents
Bad touch: when someone touches you where they shouldn't β tell them to stop and report it to parents or teachers
Tips if someone tries to kidnap you, and Mrs. Tan's conversation with May Lee about a near-kidnapping in the neighbourhood.
Scream as loudly as possible to attract attention
Shout 'Help!', 'No!', 'This is not my dad!', or 'Call the police!'
Run away as fast as possible at the first sign of trouble
Wriggle, twist, turn, and jump to make it difficult for the kidnapper
Pull or kick as hard as you can to escape
The idiom 'close shave' means a narrow escape
SK Seri Damai organises a Child Safety and Protection Carnival (25 May, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Activities include a talk on staying safe, a poster competition, self-defence demonstrations, and parenting advice. Pupils also write a story 'The Big Bully' using words: reading, alone, library, fierce, demanded, money, refused, punched, prefect, reported, punished.
Vijay was reading alone in the library
A fierce boy came and demanded money; Vijay refused
The boy punched Vijay's face but Vijay avoided him
A prefect saw what happened and reported it to the headmaster
The bully was punished
The future continuous tense talks about an action that will be happening at a particular moment in the future. Structure: shall/will + be + verb-ing.
| I / we (positive) | shall + be + having = shall be having | |
| he / she / it / they (positive) | will + be + playing = will be playing | |
| I / we (negative) | shall not + be + doing = shall not be doing | |
| he / she / it / they (negative) | will not + be + watching = will not be watching | |
From 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl β Charlie's family lives in a small wooden house with only two rooms and one bed given to the four grandparents. Charlie is a well-mannered boy with a big heart.
Grandpa Joe & Grandma Josephine are Mr. Bucket's parents
Grandpa George & Grandma Georgina are Mrs. Bucket's parents
Mr. and Mrs. Bucket have a son named Charlie
Activity: label Charlie Bucket's family tree, then create your own family tree
The future continuous tense describes an action that will be in progress at a future time (will/shall + be + verb-ing). To stay safe from kidnapping: scream, shout 'Help!', run away, wriggle, and kick. A 'close shave' means a narrow escape.
π Kosa Kata
Karate-do, which May Lee practises, means 'the way of the empty hand' in Japanese. The 'do' at the end means 'way' or 'path', showing that karate is not just about fighting β it's about discipline and self-improvement.
