Unit 7: The King's Decision
This unit is about a peaceful kingdom called Artistic ruled by King Sam. Pupils give directions, read the story of King Sam's heir, write a letter, learn the conjunctions 'although' and 'since', and read about Willy Wonka's contest.
John wants to go to the King's castle. Directions and castle vocabulary:
Walk straight on and turn left at the first junction
Walk on and turn left again at the second junction until you reach a roundabout
Take the second exit — the castle is at the end of the road
A throne room is a large hall where the king usually sits
A courtyard is an enclosed space open to the sky, usually with a garden
King Sam of Artistic needs an heir. He announces that whoever can draw the most beautiful portrait of him will be the next king. Key events:
John, who loved painting, was the first to arrive at the palace
Everyone painted portraits of the king in his red royal cloak
John brought a golden mirror instead, because nothing he drew was perfect
King Sam was delighted — the reflection in the mirror was perfect
King Sam proclaimed John as the next King
Pupils write a friendly letter with the correct format about visiting the King's castle. Parts of a letter:
1) Address — 812, Artistic Road, 46600 Artistic Land
2) Date — 23 July 20_
3) Salutation — Dear Ashton,
4) Introduction, 5) Content, 6) Closing, 7) Complimentary closure, 8) Signature
'Although' shows contrast; 'since' shows cause and effect. Do NOT add 'but' after 'although'.

Mr Willy Wonka, the confectionery genius, allows five children to visit his factory. Five Golden Tickets are hidden under the wrapping paper of five chocolate bars. Winners will get enough chocolates and sweets to last a lifetime.

Use 'although' to show contrast (Although he was sick, he painted the portrait). Use 'since' to show cause and effect (Since he loved painting, he tried out). Never use 'but' with 'although' in the same sentence — pick one!
📝 Kosa Kata
The idiom 'butterflies in one's stomach' (which John had before the contest) describes the nervous fluttery feeling caused by adrenaline. It comes from the real physical sensation you feel when anxious — your stomach actually produces less acid and the muscles tense up!
