Save Mother Earth

31 minit📕 Buku Teks

Theme: Save Mother Earth

This theme focuses on protecting the environment. Pupils learn about the 3R campaign and recycling bins, read a speech on saving Mother Earth and a fact sheet on waste decomposition, write paragraphs with concluding sentences, study the present continuous tense, and explore the story of Hansel and Gretel.

Unit 1: Save Mother Earth
🗣️
Listening and Speaking: The 3R Campaign

Encik Hakimi explains the 3R Campaign: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Three-coloured recycling bins collect waste for recycling.

Blue binpaper — newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes
Brown binglass — bottled drinks, perfume bottles, glasses
Orange binaluminium and plastic — soft drink cans, food product tins
📖
Reading: Save Our Mother Earth (Speech)

Mr. Tan, Advisor to the Junior Environment Club, gives a speech on how young people can save Mother Earth.

1

Switch off and unplug all electrical gadgets when not in use — they still consume electricity if not unplugged.

2

Switch to energy efficient lights — fluorescent or LED bulbs last longer and use less electricity.

3

Collect rain water to water plants, clean drains and porches — conserves water and saves water bills.

4

Avoid using disposable items — plastic cups, bags, and containers take a minimum of 20 years to decompose.

5

Closing message: 'Keep the future bright, turn off the light.'

✏️
Writing: Concluding Sentences

A concluding sentence summarises the main idea of a paragraph.

1

It is the last sentence in a paragraph.

2

It restates the topic sentence using different words.

3

It should not introduce any new ideas.

4

It may use linking words such as so, thus, therefore or hence.

5

Example: 'It is important to save electricity... Therefore, we should always do our best to save electricity.'

🔤
Grammar: Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense (is/am/are + verb-ing) refers to things happening now, habits over a period of time, and things in the near future.

1

Happening now: I am reading a book on the environment.

2

Over a period of time: They are studying in the university.

3

Near future: Najmee is coming home on Thursday.

4

Negative form: They are not sleeping. He is not washing his car.

5

Example (gotong-royong): Encik Hakimi is cleaning the drain. Najmee is sorting out the rubbish. Kamini is throwing the rubbish into the recycling bins.

🎭
Language Arts: Hansel and Gretel

Pupils discuss the story of Hansel and Gretel, abandoned in the forest by their father and stepmother.

1

Hansel and Gretel stumble upon a chocolate and candy-coated house.

2

An old witch who lives in the house invites them in.

3

Discuss what is seen on the front and back cover of the book.

4

Predict and present what happens in the story.

💡

The 3R Campaign = Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Blue bin = paper; Brown bin = glass; Orange bin = aluminium and plastic. Switching off and unplugging gadgets saves electricity. Plastic takes a minimum of 20 years to decompose!

📝

Present continuous tense = is/am/are + verb-ing (happening now, over time, or near future). A concluding sentence summarises the paragraph and uses linking words like thus, therefore, hence — never introduce new ideas.

🌟
Tahukah Kamu?

Styrofoam and glass jars/bottles NEVER decompose in landfills — they last forever! Aluminium cans take 200 to 500 years to decompose, but banana and orange peels take only 3 to 4 weeks. The slogan 'Keep the future bright, turn off the light' reminds us that small actions save the Earth.
